The Edmonton Flight Information Region covers of the airspace mainly above the territories of the Yukon, North West Territory, majority of Nunavut; and the provinces of Alberta, northern parts of British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

In fact, the Edmonton FIR covers most of Canada covering points such as the geographical North Pole to the Canada USA border 49th parallel that stretches to about 2460 nautical miles; and reaches to the eastern shores of Canada’s newest territory of Nunavut to the Alaska Yukon border at about 1840 nautical miles. This makes it as one of the biggest areas to control in the world. Edmonton FIR covers a great deal of Canada’s Domestic Airspace which includes all of the Arctic and Northern Control and some parts of southern control areas. Majority of Northern Canada is non radar airspace thus traffic is controlled via position reports.

A lot of Asian and European traffic do cross the Canadian High Arctic region into Canada and the USA.
Limited radar service is available which starts near the northern end of the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan (latitude 58 degrees north) to Canada and USA border (latitude 49 degrees north).

Edmonton FIR covers most of the ADIZ, all of the standard pressure region, and includes airspaces from A to G to air route and air way.

Edmonton FIR also has major airports such as Edmonton (CYEG) and Calgary (CYYC) with paved runways that are over 12,500 feet long to typical remote uncontrolled gravel runways as short as 3000 feet such as Aklavik with IFR NDB approaches.

We think you will appreciate the variety of services and the regions that the Edmonton FIR covers which makes this a challenge for ATC and Pilots alike.

Service within the Edmonton FIR is provided in English only.

In the menu on the left you will find information and procedures for controlling or flying within the FIR. If you require further information please contact our division staff.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the biggest Airspace in the world – the Edmonton FIR.
